Root canal treatment in Bar, Montenegro

Save your tooth. Eliminate the pain. Modern endodontic treatment - gentle and precise.

Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation for being painful - in reality, it is the infection that hurts, and root canal treatment is what ends that pain. At Pavlin dental clinic in Bar, Dr. Irina Soboleva uses modern endodontic instruments - apex locator, endodontic motor and rotary files - to perform root canal treatment that is thorough, precise and comfortable. Your natural tooth is worth saving.

What is root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth is a narrow channel called the root canal, which contains the dental pulp - the soft tissue made up of nerves and blood vessels. When a tooth is severely decayed, cracked or injured, bacteria can penetrate into this inner chamber and cause an infection. Left untreated, this infection spreads to the surrounding bone and can cause a dental abscess.

Root canal treatment - also called endodontic treatment - removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, then fills and seals them to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown. The result: your natural tooth is saved, the infection is eliminated, and the pain is gone.

At Pavlin dental clinic in Bar, we use modern endodontic instruments - including an apex locator, endodontic motor and rotary files - that make root canal treatment more precise, more comfortable and more reliable than ever before.

Root canal treatment saves your natural tooth

Keeping your natural tooth is always preferable to extraction. A saved tooth functions better, looks better and preserves the surrounding bone structure.

Signs you may need root canal treatment

⚠

Severe, persistent toothache

Deep, throbbing pain that does not subside - especially when biting or applying pressure. One of the clearest indicators of pulp infection.

⚠

Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold

Sensitivity that lingers long after the hot or cold stimulus is removed - not just a brief reaction.

⚠

Swelling or tenderness

Swelling in the gum or face near the affected tooth, or tenderness in the lymph nodes in the neck.

⚠

Darkening of the tooth

A tooth that has become noticeably darker than surrounding teeth may have a dying or dead pulp.

⚠

Dental abscess (gum boil)

A pimple-like swelling on the gum that may ooze fluid - a sign of active infection requiring urgent treatment.

Root canal treatment - step by step

1

Diagnosis

A digital intraoral X-ray shows the extent of infection, the number and shape of root canals, and the surrounding bone condition. Your dentist explains the findings and the proposed treatment plan.

2

Local anaesthesia

We administer local anaesthetic to ensure you feel no pain during the procedure. The tooth and surrounding area are completely numb before we begin. You will feel pressure, but not pain.

3

Accessing the pulp

A small opening is made through the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. We place a rubber dam to keep the area clean and dry throughout the procedure.

4

Canal cleaning & shaping

Using an endodontic motor with rotary files, we remove the infected pulp tissue and carefully shape the root canals. An apex locator precisely measures the length of each canal - ensuring thorough cleaning right to the tip.

5

Irrigation & disinfection

The canals are thoroughly irrigated with disinfecting solution to eliminate all remaining bacteria. This step is critical to prevent reinfection.

6

Filling & restoration

The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed. The tooth is then restored - typically with a composite filling, or referred for a permanent crown if significant tooth structure was lost.

Modern equipment = better outcomes

Root canal treatment has changed dramatically over the past two decades. At Pavlin dental clinic, we use instruments that make the procedure more accurate, more thorough and more comfortable:

πŸ” Apex Locator

Electronically measures the exact length of each root canal - eliminating guesswork and reducing the need for repeated X-rays. Ensures thorough cleaning without overfilling.

βš™οΈ Endodontic Motor with Rotary Files

Motorised rotary instrumentation is faster and gentler than manual filing, produces a smoother canal shape, and significantly reduces the risk of file separation or canal transportation.

πŸ“‘ Digital Intraoral X-Ray

Instant, detailed radiographs with significantly lower radiation than traditional film X-rays - used before, during and after treatment to confirm quality at every stage.

After root canal treatment

Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the recovery is. Here is what to expect:

βœ“

Mild soreness is normal for 1-3 days - manageable with standard over-the-counter pain relief. The treated tooth may feel slightly tender when biting.

βœ“

You can eat normally once the anaesthetic wears off - just avoid very hard foods on the treated side until it is fully restored.

βœ“

A final restoration (composite filling or crown referral) completes the treatment. A tooth that has had root canal treatment should always be properly restored to protect it from fracture.

βœ“

Long-term success rate of root canal treatment is over 90% when properly performed and restored. The treated tooth can last a lifetime.

What if I don't treat it?

An untreated dental infection will not resolve on its own. It will spread - to the surrounding bone, adjacent teeth and potentially beyond. Extraction becomes inevitable. Early root canal treatment is always better than delay.

Pricing

Root canal treatment pricing depends on the number of canals in the tooth (single-rooted vs multi-rooted) and the complexity of the case. We will give you a clear, specific price after the initial examination and X-ray. Dental examination: 10€ (includes the doctor's verbal consultation).

Frequently asked questions

Does root canal treatment hurt? +

This is the most common concern - and the most common misconception. Modern root canal treatment performed under local anaesthesia is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. You will feel the anaesthetic injection, then nothing. The procedure itself is painless. The pain that people fear from root canal is actually the pain of the infection - which the treatment relieves. Most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is. Dr. Soboleva has been performing endodontic treatment for 26 years and her approach is always unhurried and gentle.

How many appointments does root canal treatment take? +

In most cases, root canal treatment at our clinic can be completed in one or two appointments. A single-rooted tooth (like a front tooth or premolar) can often be treated in one session. Multi-rooted teeth (molars) may require two visits. The second appointment, if needed, allows time for the tooth to settle and ensures complete disinfection before final sealing. We will tell you at the first appointment how many sessions are likely.

What happens if I don't get root canal treatment when I need it? +

A dental infection will not go away on its own - antibiotics alone cannot eliminate an infection within the tooth. If left untreated, the infection spreads to the surrounding bone, can cause a painful abscess, and will eventually destroy enough tooth structure that extraction is unavoidable. It can also spread to adjacent teeth. Early root canal treatment is always the better option - it saves the tooth and stops the infection at its source.

Can I eat and go back to work after root canal treatment? +

Yes - most patients return to normal activities the same day. The anaesthetic wears off within a few hours, and mild soreness for 1-3 days is the typical recovery. You can eat once the anaesthetic is gone (start with softer foods on the treated side). Most patients take no time off at all. If you have heavy tartar or complex cases, we will advise accordingly.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment? +

It depends on how much natural tooth structure remains. A tooth that has had root canal treatment can become more brittle over time, and a crown provides protection against fracture. For back teeth (molars and premolars) with significant structure loss, a permanent crown is strongly recommended. For front teeth with minimal preparation, a composite filling may be sufficient. For permanent crowns, we prepare the tooth and refer you to a trusted prosthetics specialist. We will advise you on the best option for your specific tooth.
